10 Great Mission Trip Ideas

May 16th, 2010

missions_ccoThere’s no such thing as a stereotypical mission trip. Although they all share a goal — to serve others — the sheer number of locations, organizations, and people to help means that there’s always a different trip to experience and a different way to help people while sharing the gospel. The ideas on this list cover a variety of mission trips. Some are suggestions for specific trips, while others are for groups that can connect you with those in need; some are for high schoolers and youth groups, while others are longer-term internships for college students. But they’re all fantastic resources for people looking to give back to the world around them. Contact each organization for more info.

1. North American Mission Board
The North American Missions Board is part of the Southern Baptist Convention, and their Student Mission Groups are dedicated to serving in a variety of areas, from performing construction and beautification projects in low-income neighborhoods to sending teams of students to aid in response to natural disasters like floods and fires.

2. War Week
Detroit is one of the most affected cities in the country in terms of urban decay and poverty, and War Week is designed to teach students about the community around them while also instructing them in door-to-door evangelism. Students visit and rebuild empty playgrounds and deserted lots, and the week is designed to help them spread their faith through the positive example of public service. War Week also features several speakers from churches nationwide.

3. Teen Missions International
Using the tagline “Mission trips for youth of all ages,” Teen Missions International is an interdenominational organization that’s sent more than 42,000 teens into the world on service projects since its inception in 1971. They operate an array of camps and mission trips divided by age group, and there’s also a trip for adults, though older teens and adults should be prepared for rugged conditions, including sleeping in tents and going without electricity.

4. Central Dallas Ministries
Headed by CEO and president Larry James, Central Dallas Ministries is a boots-on-the-ground group with more than 20 years’ experiences serving the poor and homeless. With an emphasis on community compassion, CDM is a great place for youth groups nationwide to spend time learning to give back and become servants. James also maintains a blog where he writes about spirituality, politics, and social justice.

5. Believers World Outreach
Believers World Outreach focuses on mission trips for both individuals and youth groups, with an emphasis on poor and developing regions like Uganda, Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico, and other spots around the world. These short-term missions are designed to help communities heal themselves by providing them with new buildings and medical care. BWO also is working to aid the citizens of Haiti in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake.

6. Alongside Ministries International
Alongside Ministries primarily focuses on Europe for its mission trips, working in Albania, Estonia, France, Germany, and Scotland. Their emphasis is on evangelism and church planting in regions that don’t have many Christian churches or meeting places.

7. United Planet
United Planet works with mission trip groups for “short-term quests” that range from one to 12 weeks in duration. The organization is a secular one, so preaching and proselytizing aren’t allowed, but the service opportunities are still fantastic opportunities for church youth groups to learn about service in different parts of the world. The lessons learned can be applied back home with a religious angle.

8. Adventures in Missions: Real Life
Adventures in Missions offers a wide array of trips for youth groups that last up to two weeks, but their Real Life program goes much deeper, sending college-age students into the field for up to three months. Participants in Real Life do everything from plant churches to teaching English and working with victims of social injustices like sex trafficking, with destinations including the Philippines, Bolivia, and the Amazon jungles of Peru.

9. Awana
Awana’s internship program is designed for college-age students to spend a summer working with missionaries in Awana-registered churches. They’re designed to teach students about what it takes to run a church and serve a community, and locations are as diverse and far-flung as Hungary and South Korea.

10. Ambassadors in Missions
Ambassadors in Missions sends students to more than 250 countries to help those in need, and they also coordinate events here in the U.S., like a fall 2010 event in Detroit that will allow students to organize community outreach programs and participate in grocery distribution and service projects.

15 Amazing Christian Camps for Kids of All Ages

May 10th, 2010

summer camps-ccauAh, summer camp. Whether it’s a week in the woods or two months by a lake, there’s something about the experience that’s a rite of passage for a lot of young people. That’s definitely the case with Christian camps, where middle schoolers and high schoolers learn more about their faith while also experiencing nature and growing closer together. There are many wonderful Christian camps available, but here are some of the best:

1. Pine Cove
With seven camps in northeast Texas and another three farther south, Pine Cove offers a variety of youth camps as well as family camps designed with a Christian emphasis. The youth camp locations are divided up by age, with some targeted for broad ranges like 3rd through 9th grade, while others are for more narrow age groups like students entering 10th through 12th grade.

2. Forest Glen
Another Texas outfit, Forest Glen is located in the Sam Houston National Forest near Huntsville, about an hour north of Houston. They’ve been operating annual summer camps for churches and youth groups since 1971, and they’re also available for weekend retreats

3. Carolina Creek Christian Camp
Also near Huntsville (Texas is big on summer camps), Carolina Creek Christian Camp is a newer camp that’s only been around since 2000, but in that time it’s come to serve the needs of many youth throughout the state.

4. Hume Lake Christians Camps
Located in the Sierra National Forest of central California, about 90 minutes east of Fresno, Hume Lake Camps offer a gorgeous scenic backdrop for their spiritual events. Most camp sessions are a week long, with 10 sessions available throughout the summer. There are also a pair of men’s and women’s retreats in the fall, as well as family camp offerings for father-son and mother-daughter pairs. The location also means that Hume Lake runs winter camps as well, letting students play in the snow while also reminding them of their larger spiritual purpose.

5. Kanakuk Kamps
Based in Branson, Missouri, Kanakuk Kamps traces its roots to 1926. The coeducational camps are split by rough age groups, like 7-13 or 13-18, and they’ve even got a Facebook page set up for camp alumni to stay in touch.

6. The Wilds
Like a lot of camps on this list, The Wilds operates sessions for adults and families as well as the more common youth camps. That makes it ideal for church retreats and family getaways as well as a fun spiritual destination for teenage campers. The campus is located in the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina.

7. T Bar M Camps
Located near New Braunfels, Texas, a tiny town south of Austin, T Bar M Camps use great outdoor activities like rope courses to help teach campers to rely on each other and show humility, courage, and other Christian disciplines. The camp has been a favorite of teens statewide for years, and the weeklong sessions fill up quickly.

8. Hartland Christian Camp
Located in the Sierra Mountains of California, Hartland is a nondenominational camp and conference center that runs summer and winter camps for middle schoolers and high schoolers. Sessions run the typical week, and activities on hand include canoeing, hiking, archery, outdoor sports, and even a zip line.

9-11. Christian Camps and Conferences in New England
There are several outfits overseen by this northeastern outfit, including Brookwoods Camp for Boys, Deer Run Camp for Girls, and Moose River Outpost. Spread through New Hampshire and Maine, the camps offer teens the ability to spend up to eight weeks in the woods, though shorter programs are also available for campers interested in one-weel, two-week, or four-week adventures. The isolated beauty of the region is ideal for spending time with nature and developing spiritual relationships with fellow campers.

12. Woodland Christian Camp and Retreat Center
Nestled in the hills of western Georgia, Woodland Christian Camp was founded in 1969 and has since grown to include four campuses on 120 acres. Weekend camps are available for elementary schoolers, while teens in high school typically spend close to a week at the facility.

13. Thousand Pines Christian Camp
Running eight week-long sessions throughout the summer, Thousand Pines features guest speakers, group devotionals, and tons of outdoor activities for its campers. The camp is located in Crestline, California, north of San Bernardino and adjacent to the Los Angeles metro area.

14. Ironwood
Located north of Barstow, California, Ironwood Camp offers Christian teens a Western twist on the classic camp set-up, with activities like horsemanship and shooting ranges with lessons designed to complement their devotionals and spiritual growth.

15. Warm Beach Camp
People don’t often think of the Pacific Northwest as a camp destination, but Warm Beach Camp is changing that. Located at Warm Beach in Stanwood, Washington, the camp offers sessions for 4th-6th graders and another for 7th-9th graders. Offering activities like hiking and nature exploration, as well as some carefully monitored target practice with BB guns, the camp is a great choice for younger campers just beginning to develop spiritually.

Family camping with tent and cookingGrowing up my family was particularly strong in our Christian faith and really enjoyed being together as much as possible.  I remember going to Christian camps and several family camping trips very vividly.  It seems as though that these types of trips are far less common now.  Even when we do go if you take that gameboys, portable DVD players, and the like I’m not sure you really get anywhere close to the same experience.  It seems we sometimes tend to take a perfectly good camping trip with an opportunity to enjoy the World God blessed us with into a garden variety weekend of gaming and movies (which we could just as easily do from the comforts of our own homes).  Well, let’s try to break out of that mold and investigate some interesting camping ideas that come from these 30 camping related blogs:

Christian Colleges: Are They Different?

Jan 4th, 2010

Choosing a college can be a very difficult task. Many highly rated colleges and universities are worth looking into. I wanted one that would enhance my spiritual, social, and academic values. My parents had little influence on my college decision. I was alone. Just one of the many who had to decide where to spend the most formative years of my life.

I once held the belief that selecting a Christian Liberal Arts College would prevent me from being a witness to the unsaved, and jeopardize my education. Several churches that I attended and friends I respected supported a Non-Christian education for two basic reasons: Academic standards could be lower at a private college and there would be little or no opportunity to win others to Christ.
I have learned through my first few weeks here at a noted Baptist University, in the Fall of 1986, that this theory about no witnessing opportunities is absolutely untrue. First of all, there are more rules to be broken on this campus, so the men of the world who want to be radical are going to try everything they can to break them without getting caught.

That’s where I come in. These guys may be cool with the majority of the guys on my dorm wing, but when they come around me they know I stand up for my Christian beliefs. I may have a priestly nickname by the end of the year, who knows? When guys come down the hall cussing up a storm at one o’clock in the morning there needs to be some kind of mediator. Those sources and associates that had me believing everyone in a Christian College was saved must have been on L.S.D.-”A Low on Common Sense Diet.”

The second belief that concerned me the most was low academic standards. Many students are paying almost seven grand a year to attend college, why on earth would a Christian teacher fail a student? This would lower enrollment, make the school look bad to the public, and give teachers a bad name. Academic standards must be lower in a private college, right?

Wrong! Professors who teach here at our Christian University have degrees from Baylor University, Pepperdine, University of Southern California, and University of Illinois, to name just a few. I enjoy listening and learning from those who have had hard core “upper class” educations and include this into their Christian faith. Also, with low academic standards it would have been very difficult to receive the accreditation that this college has obtained.

Miraculous changes can take place on a Christian campus. Continuous Bible reading and teaching leads to greater knowledge. After all, Solomon in the Book of Proverbs does state: “The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” The students, professors, and faculty that I’ve met in my first few weeks here on campus have been people whose sole purpose is to serve God with all their heart.
That’s big for me, because I believe that without the positive influence of Christian friends I do not believe that I can reach my full potential in college or in my life’s goals and dreams for that matter.
Though once led astray, I now believe that the Christian Liberal Arts Education is superior to universities that are based solely on academic standards. My decision on this issue may sound very one-sided. I have to agree with you. However, my thesis is summed up most eloquently in the book of proverbs: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge.”

The Popularity of Christian Rock Music

Jan 4th, 2010

“Christian Rock”, the genre often scoffed at by traditional rock artists, enthusiasts & critics alike is gaining popularity and stamping its place as a sort after genre for the young generation of head-banging, mosh-pitting gurus! Didn’t Christian rock die a couple of years ago, you ask? Christian rock music is growing faster than ever before with Daily News of Christian Rock Music, new artists & albums streaming across the Internet and pumping the airways continuously every day. So where did this religious music come from? I mean this is new right?

This type of rock music wasn’t around 20 years ago, was it? Well I didn’t think so until recently, the reality is Christian music or should I say Christian rock music has been around seemingly since the dawn of creation! So why seeing it today all the time? Where were the God Rocker’s for so long and what happened to the voice of damnation for those participating in anything other than a church hymn or Sunday school choir? The chastity belt of today’s Christian rock is alive and kicking. There are many religious organisations who oppose this form of music, I will talk more about this opposition later.

Most Christians are in favor of this “movement” feeling that Christian rock music is another way to reach people with the importance of the Christian faith. So why the controversy?, what is so different about Non-Christian rock music in comparison to Christian rock? Many have asked this question and instead of quoting Mr. Bob Dylan “the answer is blowing in the wind”, I thought I would analyze the facts and see why there is so much “opposition” to the sounds of “thumping grace”. After reviewing many rock & heavy metal music bands and performances and then compared them to their Christian counterparts, I did see differences but not many! The stage performance was very similar with the exception of Non-Christian heavy metal revealing more of a dark or sadistic side at times in general there was little if no difference in presentation from Christian rock to standard or Non-Christian music. The only real difference I could see was in the lyrical content, with Christian rock music singing words from the Bible and preaching family values.

So why was Christian rock music introverted for so many years, seemingly hiding in the shadows from more upright members of the Christian community? Well apparently they weren’t hiding at all, it’s just that I like many people didn’t even know they were around back then! Good old fashioned Christian rock bands like Petra, Stryper, Bloodgood, Whitecross and Tourniquet have been rocking Christians and secular music lovers alike for generations.

The voice of rock damnation is still screaming louder than ever in some Christian circles although seemingly falling on deaf ears of a Christian Rocker community that grows bigger every day. Who opposes this Christian liberation? Who else but other Christians! It seems some segments of who have not advanced to modern day sounds are Bible bashing these Christian rock music head bangers with eternal consequences for their “misguidance”. The most dramatic example I came across was the seventh day adventist (SDA) church who proclaim that Christian rock music is quote “Devil music”. The seventh day adventist church preach that all rock music has the “beat of the devil” borrowed from primate heathen rituals, beating in time with the body’s “natural rhythms”. I found it hard to believe that people could think this way at first, but indeed it is true and the SDA church is serious about stamping out any and all rock music, or anything for that matter that has a drum beat!

Important Reasons to Have a Christian Home

Dec 4th, 2009

When Christian campus students or singles consider a new living situation, a few questions might come up.

Should I live alone? (It would be nice to have a place all to myself!)

Should I find some roommates? (It would be great to split the bills!)

If I do live with someone else, how do I choose? (Who would be easy to live with?)

But for the follower of Jesus, these questions are tempered by some even bigger questions…

What is God’s will for my life? Does God care whether I live alone or with others? Are some things God could teach me through Christian roommates that I won’t learn living by myself?

The good news is that the Bible has much to say about Christian households—and God’s definition of household goes far beyond whether people are related by blood. In fact, when you move in with roommates, in God’s eyes you are living in an extension of His household!

God’s View of Household

The dictionary defines household as a person or group of people occupying a single dwelling or the living spaces and possessions belonging to such a unit. This definition could include family members, but not just those who are blood relatives. Family also refers to people who share common attitudes, interests and goals.

This last definition of family aptly describes the Christian family. While Christians are united by Christ’s blood, they also share a deep common bond and similar goals in the faith. In fact, God feels so strongly about the connection believers share in his church, he made it a household (Ephesians 2:19).

We can also look to the many “one another” verses sprinkled throughout the New Testament as evidence of God’s desire that we live in relationship, including:

“Be devoted to one another…” (Romans 12: 10a) “Love one another…” (Romans 13:8) “Serve one another…” (Galatians 5:13) “Be kind and compassionate to one another…” (Ephesians 4:32) “Admonish one another…” (Colossians 3:16) “Encourage one another…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) “Spur one another on…” (Hebrews 10:24) “Offer hospitality to one another…” (1 Peter 4:9)

It is clear that God intended for us to learn much in relationship. Living in the same residence as others oftentimes speeds this learning curve. Learning to love, serve, forgive, share and communicate become more than lofty ideas—they become our lifeline to getting along!

Perhaps the question students or singles should ask before transitioning to a new living situation is, “What would help me learn the most in my walk with God?”

If you’re ready to ask that gutsy question, than I believe the Bible gives at least six reasons why establishing a household with Christian roommates may be the best option.

1) Together, we are protected. There is great strength in numbers. Just take a look at the animal kingdom. A wolf can easily overtake a sheep that’s wandered off from the fold. But a group of sheep are less likely to be attacked, especially if they have a good shepherd watching over them.

God, as the Good Shepherd, knew that we help to face the many obstacles, attacks and hardships that come our way (Isaiah 40:11). Christian roommates can be a hedge of protection—seeing dangers Satan introduces and helping keep us on the straight and narrow (Proverbs 4:11).

2) Together, we grow more. Like marriage, living with other people is a great revealer of character—ours and theirs! Many times, we learn more about ourselves by living with others who are not like us. And confronting areas of our character that need refinement is key to growing in Christ-likeness.

With God’s help, people can reflect to us the things we are doing well and parts of our life that can more glorify God. We also get to be that reflection to others and encourage growth in our roommates with grace, truth and love (Ephesians 4:15).

3) Together, we learn more. The book of Proverbs continually calls us to seek outside counsel and warns us from relying on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). Being immersed in relationship allows us to engage new ideas, experience the world in innovative ways and challenge our own thinking.

Establishing a Christian household is also valuable preparation. As we learn how to communicate respectfully, resolve conflict and even express ourselves vulnerably, these skills become part of our character—skills that we can bring one day into marriage and parenting.

4) Together, we walk in the light. God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone (Genesis 2:18), so He brought him a companion/roommate/mate — Eve. Like Adam and Eve, we all need companionship, love and acceptance in our lives. But we also need to walk in the truth, and when we live in relationship, it’s simply harder to “hide out.”

When we allow other people who are following God into our lives, it is more difficult for Satan to get a foothold. Just as Eve’s natural inclination was to hide from the Lord, we are often just as likely to escape if we have unconfessed sin, bitterness or pain in our lives. Roommates are oftentimes God’s angels looking out for us and reminding us that we are really never alone.

5) Together, we are cared for. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 reminds us that two are better than one. Why? If one falls down, the other can pick him or her up. This passage doesn’t just imply that God is part of a godly marriage. It also affirms the value of friendship with God as the focal point.

Just as Jesus reached out to touch lepers and heal the blind, God often uses people to offer tangible signs of His love. Roommates can pray for us, serve us and lend a listening ear when we need to talk. Similarly, we can be the hands and feet of Christ when someone else needs a word of encouragement or a caring friend.

6) Together, we can do more. No one can accuse God of not being practical! He designed the church so that when everyone does his or her part, more people benefit—inside and outside of the church. Likewise, Christian households are a great example of taking God’s advice to work together to achieve more.

For anyone renting an apartment, it is more manageable to split rent three ways. It’s easier to make the living space functional when we each contribute furniture, dishes, etc. Living in relationship also allows each of us to gain from our different strengths (Romans 12:6a).

God has never gone it solo

What we forget sometimes is that, within his very nature, God is relational. From the beginning, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit were together, living in complete unity, in what could even be considered a prototype of a household. Consider…

- Relationship came before the creation — Jesus talked about how God loved him even before the creation of the world (John 17:23). The plans set in motion before the creation (1 Peter 1:2) were lovingly spun by God through relationship.

- The creation was carried out in relationship — When God made man, he said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26, emphasis mine) While the earth was still formless, we find the Spirit of God hovering over the waters. Scripture tells us that all things were created through Jesus (Colossians 1:16).

Here we find our model for household. The Father, Son and Spirit creating together. Loving together. Planning together. Rejoicing together. If we look at the relational nature of the Godhead, we catch a glimpse of why he might have decided to put us within relationships too.

1 Peter 2:5 describes God’s family as, “living stones being built together into a spiritual house.” Having Christian roommates is a beautiful illustration of how living stones can become a spiritual house where God is honored and lives among you.
